Visionary Artist. Fine Art Painter
For me ,as an artist, the paintbrush is a medium for us to convey our feelings and ideas onto a canvas. I consider myself as a medium for the creative spirit to speak through me; for dimensions to reveal themselves through each stroke of my brush.
Curator's Note
Amal Joy is a visionary artist, who’s work reflects the relationship between the physical and the spiritual worlds, between surrender and flow, form and formlessness.
Amal began his journey into art during his engineering degree in 2016, after a serious accident that left him on bedbound. His cousin bought him a sketch book to keep him occupied during his recovery - so here’s a lesson that we don’t ever really know what one act of kindness can do to change the course of someone’s life.
A few years later and Amal travelled to the UK to study fine art at Leeds Beckett University. It was during his time in the UK that Amal found out his purpose for creating, the real reason his soul was longing to paint.
Searching for his “why”, he began responding to political events through his paintings, using art as a way to raise his voice - but still, there was something missing, and life in the UK became increasingly more challenging for him. Trying to balance being a student and working to make ends meet, often meant that he would finish a night shift, catch a bus and train to his university, and begin his studies for the day.
His mental health began declining, anxiety and depression taking over, and a deep sense of isolation surrounding him. Amal describes this time as if he was falling down into the depths of his mind.
Everything changed when Amal stumbled across the world of psychedelics and psytrance. He continued falling into the depths of his mind, yet now, he was able to navigate this world through art, music, and meditation. Now with the understanding that this suffering was showing him something, showing him how to navigate his own darkness and shadows.
“I was forced to look inwards. It became clear that I no longer had to look externally for inspiration, but that my connection to creative spirit was what I needed to create a conscious relationship with - I became a vessel” - You can see this shift through his series of paintings called “A Journey Of Conscious Awakening”
From this point, his career as an artist began to flourish. With several Group shows and solo exhibitions between the UK and India, receiving his BA in Fine Arts and being hired for commissions and projects across the UK.
Fast Forward to the present moment, and Amal’s vision for his work is to inspire its audience to look within themselves, to use his art as a mirror for reflection.
Here you can deep dive into his entire collection, or rather, take a look inside the deeper parts of collective consciousness.
Enjoy.
